City Sonic Toronto Artist and Kalimba player Laura Barrett

LAURA BARRETT is an indie-pop singer/songwriter and kalimba player.

Born in Toronto, she first arrived on the scene as a member of the successful ensemble acts Hidden Cameras and Henri Fabrige and the Adorables in the mid-2000s.

Classically trained on piano and clarinet, she is best known for adopting the kalimba, an African thumb piano. Her first solo performance was in 2005 at a Weird Al tribute night at the tiny venue The Bagel, where she became a regular performer. Her solo music incorporates sci-fi themes and sparse but eclectic instrumentation. She has been signed to PaperBag Records, nominated for a SOCAN songwriting prize and been voted "Canada's sexiest musician" by the listeners of CBC Radio 3.

She was recently artist in residence in the Yukon, where she performed live with her lifelong Toronto music idol Martin Tielli, formerly of the Rheostatics.
